DATA METHODOLOGY

WorldDataLive Methodology

How WorldDataLive sources, processes, validates, updates and presents international data.

Why Methodology Matters

International statistics are produced by many organizations using different definitions, reference periods, collection systems and revision schedules. WorldDataLive therefore separates the original source of an indicator from the way that indicator is presented on the website.

Whenever practical, we retain source information, reference years and the original meaning of an indicator rather than combining unrelated measurements into a single number.

Data Sources

World Bank

Used for selected population, economic, development and social indicators. World Bank definitions and reference periods remain the basis for interpretation.

Open-Meteo

Used for weather-related information. Weather observations and forecasts can change frequently and should be interpreted as time-sensitive information.

Education Sources

Education indicators are imported from identified international statistical sources and retain their reported reference years.

Tourism Sources

Tourism indicators are stored with their metric, year and source so that annual statistics are not confused with current estimates.

Conflict Sources

Conflict information follows the definitions and methodology of the specialist source used for the relevant dataset.

Data Processing

  1. Source retrieval: automated services retrieve data from the relevant external source.
  2. Normalization: values, country identifiers, dates and units are normalized for consistent storage.
  3. Validation: records are checked for required identifiers, valid values and expected formats.
  4. Comparison: incoming values are compared with the corresponding database record using NULL-safe comparisons where appropriate.
  5. Change detection: unchanged values are skipped instead of being unnecessarily rewritten.
  6. Database update: new records are inserted and genuinely changed records are updated.
  7. Presentation: the website reads the stored information and presents it through country pages, rankings, comparisons, maps and other interfaces.

Change Detection and Duplicate Prevention

WorldDataLive is designed so that scheduled imports can run repeatedly without treating every retrieval as a database change. The system compares incoming values with existing records before writing them.

When an incoming record is identical to the stored record, the importer skips the database write. When a record is new, it is inserted. When an existing record has materially changed, it is updated.

This approach reduces unnecessary database writes and helps preserve stable timestamps and historical consistency.

Reference Years and Update Frequency

Not every indicator is updated at the same frequency. Weather information can change throughout the day, while annual economic, demographic, tourism and education indicators may have a much slower publication cycle.

WorldDataLive therefore does not assume that the newest publication date means that every indicator represents the same period. The relevant indicator year or observation time should always be considered.

Missing and Null Data

A missing value is not automatically treated as zero. Where the source does not provide a valid value, WorldDataLive attempts to preserve the absence of data rather than inventing a number.

Country Identification

Country records use standardized identifiers where available, including ISO country codes. These identifiers help connect country profiles, maps, rankings, weather information and other datasets while reducing ambiguity caused by different country-name spellings.

Data Limitations

  • Source datasets may contain revisions or corrections.
  • Some indicators may have different reference years between countries.
  • Coverage may vary between datasets.
  • Some values may be estimates rather than direct observations.
  • Conflict and weather information can change rapidly.
  • Country comparisons may not always be directly equivalent when definitions differ.

Corrections and Updates

If an error is identified in a source or in the presentation of a dataset, WorldDataLive may update the affected record when reliable supporting information is available.
